Step into the grand halls of the Spanish court and discover the life and legacy of this influential artist during the Age of Absolutism. From painting kings and queens to capturing the dignity of ordinary people, explore beyond the surface of the canvas through stories, discussion and art journaling.

Over an eight-week interdisciplinary series, students will:

  • Learn about the life and times of Velázquez in 17th-century Spain

  • Understand his pivotal role as court painter to King Philip IV

  • Dive into Las Meninas and other masterpieces through guided visual analysis

  • Explore key art concepts like light, composition, symbolism, and realism

  • See how Velázquez influenced future artists like Manet and Picasso

  • Create an artist’s journal, organizing and collecting findings while practicing techniques characteristic of the artist

Perfect for curious learners in grades 3–8, this class invites students to not just study art, but to think like artists—observant, thoughtful, and full of wonder. The cost of the course includes an UglyBooks sketchbook and all materials and supplies used are provided by the atelier.

Classes will be held on Thursdays: September 18th, October 2nd, 16th, 30th, November 20th, December 11th, January 22nd and 29th

*Make up classes are not offered, so it is recommended that students are available for every session.
